French is spoken on every continent in the world. The various countries where French is spoken as an official language, a shared primary language or a second language is called a Francophone Country.
Just as the USA is divided into 51 States, the country of France, located in Europe, is administratively divided into 18 Regions. 13 Regions are located in Europe and 5 are overseas. France also has overseas territories or collectivities.
DOM -These are the 5 overseas Regions of France (Departement d'outre mer)*. The people are French citizens and have representation in the French National Assembly and Senate.
TOM -These are the Overseas Territories/Collectivies of France (Territoires D'outre Mer)**. The people have representation in the French National Assembly and Senate.
